The first film on DC Studios’ slate will be a new Superman movie as written by the studio’s new co-head James Gunn, Gunn announced on Wednesday. And while it won’t star Henry Cavill, the actor isn’t necessarily hanging up the red cape just yet.
IndieWire on Wednesday spoke with both Gunn and his partner at DC Studios Peter Safran, who explained that the new Superman will focus on a young Clark Kent when he first arrives in Metropolis, and that Gunn has been “working on it for a long time.”
As for whether Henry Cavill will return as Superman, because the film focuses on a younger hero, it will star “someone other than Henry Cavill,” Gunn told IndieWire. However, Gunn and Safran met with Cavill recently, and say they “would love to keep him and work with him moving forward.” What’s more, Cavill announcing on Instagram that he was returning was not him “going rogue” but was instead fully sanctioned by Warner Bros. under a prior regime.
