Finally, the 95th Oscars telecast will be broadcast on Sunday, March 12 and air live on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race
Oscar favorite “Top Gun: Maverick” and other shortlisted sound contenders “Elvis,” “The Batman,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Moonage Daydream,” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” all received Oscar boosts this week with nominations from the Motion Picture Sound Editors and Cinema Audio Society. The 70th MPSE Golden Reel Awards will be held February 26 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater, and the 59th CAS Awards will take place March 4 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
“Everything Everywhere” led the MPSE nominations, with nods in three feature categories: dialogue/ADR, effects/foley, and music editing. Fellow frontrunners “Maverick,” “Elvis,” and “The Batman” scored MPSE noms for dialogue/ADR. “Maverick,” “The Batman,” and “Avatar” were also singled out for effects/foley. “Elvis” and Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion “Pinocchio” were nominated for Feature Music Editing, while “Moonage Daydream” was nominated for Music Editing – Documentary. “Pinocchio” was additionally nominated for Feature Animation with Pixar’s “Lightyear,” DreamWorks’ “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” and the surprising “DC League of Super-Pets.” Rounding out the shortlisted MPSE nominees, “All Quiet on the Western Front” will compete with “Argentina, 1985,” “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” “EO,” “The Quiet Girl,” and “Triangle of Sadness” for Outstanding Achievement in Foreign Language Feature honors.
Meanwhile, “Maverick,” “Elvis,” “The Batman,” “Avatar,” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” were nominated by the CAS in the top Live Action category, with “Moonage Daydream” securing a Documentary nomination. “Pinocchio” also scored an Animated nomination along with “Lightyear,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” Pixar’s “Turning Red,” and Ilumination’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru.” “Everything Everywhere” failed to make a mark with the sound mixers, with the Daniels’ multiverse adventure missing out on a CAS Award nomination.
The shortlisted “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Babylon” were no shows among both organization’s nominees, while some of the non-contending nominees included “The Banshees of Inisherin” (MPSE Feature Dialogue / ADR), “Empire of Light” (MPSE Feature Dialogue / ADR),”Jurassic World: Dominion” (MPSE Feature Effects / Foley), “Nope” (Feature Effects / Foley), “TÁR” (MPSE Music Editing), and “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (MPSE Music Editing), and “Good Night Oppy” (CAS Documentary).
The impressive Oscar sound shortlist demonstrated what a great season it was for sonic sensation and experimentation, marked by “Top Gun’s” hyper-real cockpit soundscapes, complex weaves of music and sound effects across different genres, hundreds of sound effects tracks stretching across multiple planes of reality. The five Oscar nominees for Best Sound — the successor to the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing awards, which were combined in 2021 — will be determined after the January 15 “bakeoff.”
