The State of the Race

Post Emmy nominations, the current working theory is that James Marsden will win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series this year for his work on the first season of “Jury Duty.” The freshman comedy from fledgling streaming service Amazon Freevee earned a surprise Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, but winning over the proposed final season of “Ted Lasso” or the critically-beloved “Abbott Elementary” and “The Bear” seems to be too much of an uphill battle. That’s why one would posit that this is its award to win. Especially since, should “Jury Duty” return for a second season, the prank show would most likely not be able to repeat the same joke of having a recognizable actor play themselves like Marsden did so flawlessly.

However, Emmy voters are often creatures of habit, so there is a good chance they hand Brett Goldstein a third Emmy for playing the irascible Roy Kent on “Ted Lasso,” even though one could definitely argue that most of his Season 3 storyline teed up Phil Dunster’s Jamie Tartt to have a breakthrough moment, hence Dunster becoming the last original series regular on the show to receive an Emmy nomination.

While “Abbott Elementary” star Tyler James Williams has won some recent awards like a Golden Globe for his performance on the ABC sitcom, the element holding him back is recent bias. “Abbott Elementary” ended its second season in April. Its primary competitor “Ted Lasso” ended right before June started. With no campaigning due to the WGA and SAG strikes, there is little Williams can do to make sure his performance is fresh in Emmy voters’ heads.

Power Rankings:

  1. James Marsden, “Jury Duty” (Amazon Freevee)
  2. Brett Goldstein, “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+)
  3. Tyler James Williams, “Abbott Elementary” (ABC)
  4. Phil Dunster, “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+)
  5. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, “The Bear” (FX)
  6. Henry Winkler, “Barry” (HBO)
  7. Anthony Carrigan, “Barry” (HBO)

Will Win: James Marsden, “Jury Duty”
Could Win:
Brett Goldstein, “Ted Lasso”
Should Win:
Anthony Carrigan, “Barry”

Last Year’s Winner: Brett Goldstein, “Ted Lasso”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: A third consecutive Emmy win for Goldstein would put him in the Emmy history books next to “The Andy Griffith Show” star Don Knotts and “Entourage” Jeremy Piven, the only two actors to achieve that same feat playing one specific role. However, the “Ted Lasso” star will not have a chance to break “Night Court” star John Larroquette’s record of four consecutive wins, as the Apple TV+ comedy is reportedly set to end this year with Season 3.
Notable Ineligible Series: Carl Clemons-Hopkins and Paul W. Downs, “Hacks” (Season 3 was not eligible)
