Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has a lot of ground to cover in its third season. Not only is there still much to see and do in the show’s canon, based on the legendary J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive Middle-earth appendices, but there are many faces, both new and old, that LOTR fans have yet to meet.
The show’s expansive panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 went a long way in introducing some of those faces. From Eddie Marsan as dwarf Thrain, to Andrew Richardson as son of Elendil Anarion, to…wait a minute, this can’t possibly be right – oh wow, I guess it is: Simon Pegg as The Balrog.
Exciting as those castings were, however, it was the character announcement leading up to Comic-Con that stole the show. Jamie Campbell Bower is coming to Middle-earth’s Second Age to portray the sagacious elf and future Lord of Lothlórien, Celeborn. Bower’s casting was technically announced far earlier but back then the name and nature of his character were unknown. Of course, fans quickly determined that Bower would likely be playing an elf of note given his naturally ethereal visage and popularity as Stranger Things‘ big bad Henry Creel a.k.a. Vecna. Those fans were indeed correct as Celeborn is as notable an elf as they come (with apologies to Glorfindel who will certainly have his time in the sun of Aulë eventually).
Featuring prominently in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and its subsequent appendices, Celeborn is the husband of Galadriel (ever heard of her?!?) and an important figure in Middle-earth dating all the way back to the First Age. Despite his living status in Tolkien’s canon, Celeborn has been missing and presumed dead in the first two seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, at least according to Galadriel.
At SDCC 2026, Den of Geek caught up with The Rings of Power showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay and Jamie Campbell Bower himself to discover why now was the right time to bring Celeborn back into the proceedings.
“We knew from the very beginning that we were going to tell the story of how Galadriel and Celeborn build Lothlórien and build a whole life together,” McKay says. “But we also wanted to honor the fact that this is a relationship over thousands of years. We had a plan that he would come back into the show in an unexpected way. The phrase we like to use is ‘T-Bones the story.’ This season with all of Middle-earth on the brink and the war of the elves and Sauron at its height it felt like the most surprising moment for him to return.”
Tagging up on his partner’s “T-Bone” analogy, Payne chimes in with an analogy of his own.
“People are like chemicals. We each have our own individual identity but we also have our partnership identity. You have sodium and chlorine. Sodium has one identity, chlorine has another one, and sodium chloride is salt. We’ve gotten to see Galadriel’s sodium identity and now we’re getting to see her salt identity. When someone as significant for her as Celeborn to her comes back into her life, the more of her that you get to see and it reveals different sides of a character that we’ve come to know over two seasons.”
According to Celeborn himself, the big appeal of joining the Lord of the Rings mythos was getting to meet his other half.
“I’ve been a huge fan [of Galadriel actress Morfydd Clark] since Saint Maud and had been dying to ask her about the film. We connected immediately but the fanboy in me was like “don’t bring it up.” Then she was like ‘oh I did this film Saint Maud.’ I was like ‘I’m so glad you said that because I’d like to ask you some questions.’ She’s brilliant and is so well-versed in Galadriel by now. As an actor, to be able to bounce off of somebody like that and have discussions with her was such a blessing and a total joy.”
Of course, nature abhors a vacuum. And with Celeborn’s absence in seasons 1 and 2, The Rings of Power fans have latched on to Sauron (also known as “Hot Sauron”) as the object of Galadriel’s affection. As Sauron actor Charlie Vickers sees it, that dynamic is likely to persist in season 3.
“Sauron is familiar with [Celeborn]. He knows who he is. They have a shared history – obviously not as complex as his history with Galadriel – but Celebron brings this extra dynamic. If…if he meets Celeborn, he might use that as ammunition.”
Given the fact that Sauron’s season 3 arc will involve the forging of the One Ring, we feel pretty confident that it’s not a matter of if the Dark Lord will meet Celeborn, but when.
The first four episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 will premiere on November 11. Episodes five and six will be available to stream on November 18, and the final two episodes of the season will be released on November 25.
